On 20 July Premeno, a municipality of 746 inhabitants in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, celebrates its patroness Santa Margherita.
The village sits in a hollow between the San Salvatore, the Pizzo d'Omo and the Sasso Corbé, and from the old centre the lake stays hidden behind Monte Cimolo, the sentinel of Lake Maggiore. Of the several readings of the name, the favoured one is Pratus Ameni, lush meadow. Archaeologists put the first settlers in the Iron Age.
The bell tower, inaugurated in 1788, still strikes the hours. In the early twentieth century Premeno was the children's paradise: holiday camps and villas full of families up from Brianza. The new church of Santa Margherita rose during the war, seating five hundred against the hundred and fifty of the old one, now a cinema.
