Cannero Riviera

Province: Verbano-Cusio-Ossola · Region: Piedmont · Population: 973 · Postal code: 28821

Cannero first appears in a deed of property transfer in 985; communal independence came only in the fourteenth century, and in 1524 the Sforza destroyed the village because it had stayed loyal to the Visconti. The islets in front carry Cannero's name but belong to Cannobio: the castles on them, long abandoned, sheltered bandits and forgers until the Borromeo turned them into a citrus grove and a rabbit warren.

The parish church of San Giorgio, round and domed, was raised where a flood had carried off the older church; it keeps the relics of san Fausto, brought from the catacombs of San Callisto in Rome, and an organ by Felice Bossi.
