Feast of Saints Peter and Paul
📅 Every year, on 29 June
On 29 June Castelveccana, a municipality of 2,000 inhabitants in the province of Varese, celebrates its patrons Saints Peter and Paul.
The name is two names glued together. The village was called Castello, then Castello Valtravaglia from 1863, and in 1928 Veccana was annexed to it: out of that came Castelveccana. On the coat of arms there is a silver castle with Guelph battlements behind four mountains rising out of the water, which is Lake Maggiore.
What turns up here, though, is of two kinds. Underground: around 2008 some fossil remains found in the comune's territory were classified as a Marcopoloichthys, a middle Triassic fish less than five centimetres long. Above ground: every summer, between the end of July and the beginning of August, the hamlet of Caldé hosts Tutto è Numero, one of the leading Italian festivals of mathematical culture and games; and at Nasca lived Michele Mari, who set his novel Verderame there.
