Villette

Province: Verbano-Cusio-Ossola · Region: Piedmont · Population: 264 · Postal code: 28856

Villette (Vilèt in the Ossola dialect) is the smallest municipality of the Vigezzo valley and sits on a sunny glacial and alluvial terrace along the southern slope of the Costa di Faedo. It is made of three clusters known here as ville — Gagliago to the west, Vallaro in the middle, Londrago to the east — and the name comes from them. Until the early nineteenth century Gagliago on one side, Vallaro and Londrago on the other quarrelled over subsistence, with repeated boundary disputes. Some thirty sundials, old and new, are counted on the walls.

Giovanni Zucono, called Zuccone, lived at Londrago: on 29 April 1494, furious over a gambling loss, he threw a stone at the fresco of the Madonna on the front of the parish church of Re, and next morning the image was bleeding. The episode was written down days later by the valley's podestà and signed by four notaries; the people of Londrago have been called Bociamadòn ever since. Of the Vallaro castle, which depended on Vogogna and served as a border stronghold, few traces remain.
