Re

Province: Verbano-Cusio-Ossola · Region: Piedmont · Population: 757 · Postal code: 28856

Along with Ne and Vo', Re has the shortest name of any Italian comune. It is the last village in the Val Vigezzo before Switzerland: the houses gather round the sanctuary above the Melezzo, and the hamlets lie scattered from Folsogno down to Ponte Ribellasca on the frontier.

The sanctuary is dedicated to the Madonna del Sangue: by tradition, in 1494 a fresco of the nursing Madonna, struck by a stone, began to bleed, and two documents signed by the valley's podestà and several notaries recorded it. The church of San Maurizio is now enclosed in the sanctuary; in Milan the Vigezzo chimney sweeps met in a church named after the same miracle.
