Feast of Saints James and Christopher
📅 Every year, on 25 July
On 25 July Craveggia, a municipality of 728 inhabitants in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, celebrates its patrons Saint James and Saint Christopher (san Giacomo e san Cristoforo).
Craveggia takes its name from capra, the goat — Cravetia, Capretia in old records — and the goat is in the coat of arms, under the motto Bene agendo ne timeas, act well and you need not fear. Above the stone-slab roofs rise the stone chimneys: the mark of the wealth of the merchant families, who competed over who built them taller and in greater number.
In 1928 the village absorbed the comune of Vocogno e Prestinone, and in the same year it was itself folded into the new comune of Santa Maria Maggiore; autonomy came back only in 1947. The Bagni di Craveggia, long abandoned, can be reached by car only from Switzerland.
