Toceno

Province: Verbano-Cusio-Ossola · Region: Piedmont · Population: 771 · Postal code: 28858

Toceno lies halfway up the sunny side of the Val Vigezzo and takes in Arvogno as well, a handful of houses looking over the Melezzo valley. Finds recovered in 1978 belong to the first century BC and fix the earliest certain human presence here; other digs turned up medieval graves.

The village was merged first with Santa Maria Maggiore and then with Craveggia, and regained its own council in 1947. Among the houses stands the forno Thomà, an old stone oven; at the roadside is the oratory of the Madonna del Sasso, its granite columns carrying a portico, its roof laid in stone slabs, the eaves resting on carved corbels above a dry-stone wall.
