Malesco

Province: Verbano-Cusio-Ossola · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,465 · Postal code: 28854

Malesco stands on a terrace where the Loana meets the Melezzo Orientale, the largest village in the Val Vigezzo. It faces north, backed by the wooded slope of Monte Group, so in winter part of the village never sees the sun. Since 1929 it has included Finero and Zornasco, until then separate comuni.

The parish church of Santi Pietro e Paolo split from Santa Maria Maggiore in the fourteenth century and took Baroque form in the eighteenth; its stone bell tower rises over the slab roofs. Towards the Rio Secco lies the Sasso della Lissera, an erratic boulder of soapstone: women with difficult pregnancies slid down its back, a rite credited with granting fertility.
