Feast of San Bartolomeo
📅 Every year, on 24 August
On 24 August Scopa, a municipality of 391 inhabitants in the province of Vercelli, celebrates its patron San Bartolomeo.
Nothing is known of the first settlements: the name first appears in 1217, in the cittadinatico oath ratifying the Valsesia's submission to Vercelli. In 1306 the Valsesian troops gathered here to drive out the heresiarch Fra Dolcino. Some take the name from the Latin scopa, the plant whose twigs served for sweeping, others from the Piedmontese scup, pruning.
The houses keep to the valley floor of the northern Valsesia; the land climbs to Monte Badile. The parish church of San Bartolomeo, rebuilt in 1596, has a porch frescoed by Gaudenzio Ferrari's school; on the doorway of the oratory of Santa Maria Maddalena the saint is painted whom the faithful call on for rain.
