Carisio

Province: Vercelli · Region: Piedmont · Population: 864 · Postal code: 13040

The name is traced to the Roman gens Carisia, which held an estate here; Roman remains have surfaced beside San Lorenzo, the parish church. The village is documented from 1134, but the turn came earlier: Roberto di Carisio backed Arduin of Ivrea, the emperor Henry II seized his goods and in 1014 handed them to the church of Vercelli, whose bishop enfeoffed the castle.

The castle was consortial, several fortified houses with a ricetto against the stronghold; what stands is the rebuilding after Facino Cane's Visconti troops destroyed it. The parish church, remade in the fourteenth century, keeps its Gothic bell tower. Carisio is the only municipality of the Vercelli province in the Biella diocese.
