Casanova Elvo

Province: Vercelli · Region: Piedmont · Population: 265 · Postal code: 13030

Casanova Elvo takes its name from the Elvo, the stream that crosses the municipal land from west to east; the Cavour canal passes close by. Almost everyone lives in the main settlement, ringed by rice fields with the odd isolated farmstead among them. Small as it is, the commune has a working Carabinieri station.

The place is first recorded in 962, when Emperor Otto I granted it to Aimone, count of Vercelli; soon afterwards the fief went to the Church of Vercelli. In 1170 it was made over to the Avogadro brothers, Bongiovanni and Palatino, and from then on its history is theirs: in 1404 the lordship passed to the House of Savoy, which still left the Avogadro to run it until the end of the eighteenth century. The gold and red bands on the municipal arms are their family emblem.
