Dorzano

Province: Biella · Region: Piedmont · Population: 508 · Postal code: 13881

The name may come from the proto-Celtic dor, “door”, or from or, “summit”: a hilltop at the mouth of the Biellese valleys. The Latin Durzianum appears in a thirteenth-century document. The village lies between the plain and the last spurs of the Serra d'Ivrea, beside the Bessa nature reserve.

On the rise above the parish church the counts Aymone of Cavaglià fortified a ricetto between the eleventh and twelfth centuries, a shelter in wars and epidemics; a few ruins remain among the houses. In 1426 Louis of Savoy detached Dorzano from Cavaglià and granted the fief to the Valperga of Masino. A stone stairway climbs to the sixteenth-century church of San Lorenzo.
