Rimella

Province: Vercelli · Region: Piedmont · Population: 137 · Postal code: 13020

Rimella lies in the Val Mastallone, a side valley of the upper Valsesia that joins the main valley at Varallo. Walser settlers from the Valais founded it in the thirteenth century, and the village still speaks titschu, the local tongue of German origin: it shows in the double names of the hamlets, where Villa Inferiore is also Nìder Dörf and Villa Superiore is Ober Dörf, and in the two streams, the Landwasser and the Enderwasser. The coat of arms carries two blue wavy bands and, above, a pick and a shovel crossed beneath a miner's lamp.

The Giovanni Battista Filippa museum, opened in 1836 with the donation of his collections, is the first civic museum founded in Piedmont; it occupies two rooms of a house of 1415 next to the church of San Michele Arcangelo. Filippa called it his cabinet of curiosities and rare things: he wanted his neighbours to grasp how varied the world was, and he gathered books, coins, minerals and stuffed animals, bills from French, English and German inns, stagecoach tickets and sheets printed in Arabic and Hebrew.
