Feast of Saint Agatha
📅 Every year, on 5 February
On 5 February Guardabosone, a municipality of 340 inhabitants in the province of Vercelli, celebrates its patroness Saint Agatha, to whom the town's church is dedicated.
Two explanations compete for the name. In one, Guarda means a lookout on the border with neighbouring Valsesia, and Bosone goes back to the archaic German bos, which in Lombard times meant places on the valley floor: together, a lookout over it. In the other it comes from Bosone, first lord of Trivero and heir of King Arduino of Ivrea. In the Middle Ages a route from the Duchy of Savoy to that of Milan passed through the Valle Sessera.
Just over six square kilometres, it is the smallest comune in the province of Vercelli, and in that space it holds museums of natural sciences and of arts and crafts, plus a botanical garden: hence its title of living museum village, its medieval centre restored to the original form. The parish church of Sant'Agata recalls an emancipation: independence from Crevacuore's mother church came in 1626, and the new building by the Biglia brothers of Turin was finished in 1785, taking the old church's columns into its portico.
