Crevacuore

Province: Biella · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,610 · Postal code: 13864

In 1394 Pope Boniface IX granted Crevacuore in fief to Antonio Fieschi; with them came the right to strike coin, and the village kept a mint, of which a few fifteenth- and sixteenth-century pieces survive. On 9 August 1657 the people besieged the castle, held by the prince's troops, and after a furious fight levelled it. It was never rebuilt: a column with a cross was set among the ruins, and the knoll has been called Monte di Santa Croce.

At Azoglio stands the sanctuary of the Madonna della Fontana: a portico of five arches on stone columns, a bell gable on the roof, and a stone fountain on the lawn in front.
