Feast of Saint John the Baptist
📅 Every year, on 24 June
On 24 June Mollia, a municipality of 104 inhabitants in the province of Vercelli, celebrates its patron Saint John the Baptist.
La Mòja in the Valsesian dialect, In d'Molliu in Walser: Mollia stands on the Sesia in the upper Valsesia and from 1722 broke away from Campertogno to become a community of its own. Mollia and Riva Valdobbia long contested Boccorio, where they made lum, the oil lamps, and ribebbe, the jew's harps exported abroad and among the valley's most profitable trades; Boccorio ended up with Riva Valdobbia.
In the hamlet of Piana Fontana a mill-forge survives, a seventeenth-century workshop on four floors driven by a water wheel, now one of the sites of the Ecomuseo della Valsesia: the smith's room still holds the tilt hammer, bellows and anvil on which iron tools and the ribebbe themselves were beaten out. The arms are blue, with a gold compass and scalene set square and a bee in the corner of the chief. Agostino Molino was born here, a textile manufacturer and senator of the Kingdom of Sardinia, who after his daughter Palmira married baron Giovanni Andreis had a villa built in the mid-nineteenth century that took the barons' name.
