Campertogno

Province: Vercelli · Region: Piedmont · Population: 243 · Postal code: 13023

Campertogno lies in the Val Grande of the Valsesia, just below the point where the Artogna torrent joins the Sesia, and the name seems to come from that valley, from a Campus Artoniae; another reading traces it to the Latin arctare, to narrow, for the valley tightens here. Fleeing after the defeat at Romagnano, Fra Dolcino came up here with his followers: their raids for food turned the village against him, and in 1305 the battle of Camporoso was fought here, named for the field made red with blood.

In 1800 the border between France and the Cisalpine Republic was set along the Sesia, and Campertogno, which sits on both banks, was split into two comuni in two different states: the centre on one side and, on the other, the right-bank hamlets under the name Campertognetto. French guards demanded heavy transit dues, and the little chapel on the bridge is said to have been their sentry box; the two halves were reunited by decree in 1829.
