Pila

Province: Vercelli · Region: Piedmont · Population: 137 · Postal code: 13020

Pila sits on a slope of the northern Valsesia, in the province of Vercelli, on ground that rises sharply: the valley floor lies at about 686 metres, while the highest point of the municipality, uninhabited, reaches 1912 metres. Nothing is known of the first settlements; the name appears in documents only in 1217, when the village is recorded under the jurisdiction of the commune of Vercelli. From the mid-fourteenth century it belonged to the Visconti of Milan, and from the early eighteenth to the Savoys.

The coat of arms shows a chamois running across a meadow, with woodland behind. The church of San Pietro keeps fifteenth-century frescoes of apostles and prophets and an old wooden altar that probably came from Scopello; in Sant'Antonio the frescoes are seventeenth-century, and the oratory of Santa Caterina has saints painted on its outer walls. What little work is left is farming, mostly poultry.
