The church of the Santissima Trinità, commonly called the Trinità Vecchia, is a Catholic church in Altamura. It should not be confused with the church of the Trasfigurazione.
What to see
The church probably dates from the fifteenth century. The façade was rebuilt in recent times, while the present bell tower is eighteenth-century. The interior has kept its sixteenth-century structure and holds a few canvases of considerable historical value.
Also worth noting is the so-called pilgrim's cross, a cross that was kissed by the pilgrims on their way to the adjacent pilgrims' hospital.
Visiting
The church is in Altamura, in the province of Bari. The sources consulted give no opening hours or visiting arrangements: check with the parish or the Comune. The building is listed in the BeWeB catalogue of ecclesiastical cultural heritage of the Italian Episcopal Conference.
Our editors' tip
Ask about the pilgrim's cross: according to the sources it was kissed by pilgrims heading for the hospital next to the church. The name to ask for is Trinità Vecchia: the sources warn not to confuse it with the church of the Trasfigurazione.
