Local lore credits the founding of Santeramo in Colle to Saint Erasmus, a martyr from the Diocletian era who remains the town's patron saint. Known simply as Santeramo until 1863, the Apulian municipality is still called Sandèr'm by native dialect speakers.
Counting 26,770 residents within the Metropolitan City of Bari, the town sits inside the borders of the Alta Murgia National Park. This protected area defines the local geography, which historically formed part of the Murgia Barese Sud-Est mountain community.
