Cappuccini
The Capuchin church of Corato is dedicated to the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and was built in 1756. The Capuchin friars are documented in the town from 1591, and permission to build the friary dates from 1594: it was paid for by the Carafa family, counts of Ruvo di Puglia and dukes of Andria, whose fief Corato was. Since the first half of the nineteenth century the rectory has housed the Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception, known as the Sisters of Ivrea.
What to see
You enter through a large vestibule with a cross vault, and the sacristy is frescoed. The church holds a canvas by the Flemish painter Gaspar Hovich, from the late sixteenth century, and an altarpiece by Giovanni Antonio Oppido Materano: both come from the church of the Monte di Pietà, destroyed after the landslide and flood disaster of 1922.
For the people of Corato it is the centre of devotion to Saint Rita of Cascia, the Madonna del Pozzo and Saint Pio of Pietrelcina.
Visiting
The church is in the centre of Corato. Service times should be checked with the rectory.
Our editors' tip
The vigil Mass, on the eve of Sundays and holy days, in this church is interpreted into Italian Sign Language.
