On the hill behind Andria, the perfect octagon of Castel del Monte — a UNESCO site since 1996, printed on the Italian one-cent coin — has kept the riddles of Frederick II for eight centuries: neither fortress nor palace, perhaps an observatory, certainly a masterpiece. It stands seventeen kilometres from the town, inside the Alta Murgia National Park. The city below was among the emperor's favourites, and he buried two of his wives in its cathedral.
Andria is not a capital on its own: the province carries all three of its cities in its name — Barletta, Andria and Trani — and the provincial council and the police headquarters sit here. It is a young province: until 2004 all this was the province of Bari. For the rest, Andria is a farming capital of the first order: burrata was born here in the early twentieth century and is protected as an IGP; the oil from its coratina olives is among the most awarded in Italy. Almonds, vineyards and the Murgia complete the landscape.

Andria celebrates its patrons on the third Sunday of September. The second feast, the April Fair, recalls 1438: the year the body of Saint Richard, lost during a siege, was found again.
