Saint Cyril, patron of the Carpino Folk Festival
📅 Every year, on 18 May
Carpino celebrates Saint Cyril on 18 May, in the parish church dedicated to him.
Carpino is the village of the tarantellas: the Cantori di Carpino put back into circulation a repertoire that was disappearing, and out of that came the Carpino Folk Festival. For san Rocco, since the second half of the nineteenth century, a horse race is run as well, the palio.
The name was first Crapino, then Caprino and at last Carpino, as it is written in a document of 1628: it has to do with roe deer, or with the hornbeams that covered the hill. In 1526 the Sacro Consiglio ordered Carpino and Cagnano to be sold to pay the creditors of the feudatary, Fabrizio Mormille. The earthquake of 1646 left the town half destroyed.
