San Giovanni Rotondo

Province: Foggia · Region: Puglia · Population: 27,329 · Postal code: 71013

On July 28, 1916, a Capuchin friar named Padre Pio arrived in San Giovanni Rotondo, forever altering the trajectory of this Apulian community. He lived here until his death on September 23, 1968, turning a quiet provincial outpost of 27,329 residents into a major center of Catholic devotion.

Set inside the boundaries of the Gargano National Park, the townscape is dominated by his legacy. The massive Padre Pio Pilgrimage Church, dedicated on July 1, 2004, stands alongside the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza hospital founded by the saint. Visitors frequently combine this site with the nearby Sanctuary of Saint Michael the Archangel.
