Feast of San Salvatore
📅 Every year, on 6 August
On 6 August Castelluccio dei Sauri, a municipality of 2,119 inhabitants in the province of Foggia, celebrates its patron San Salvatore.
In the fields around Castelluccio a good many Daunian stelae have come to light, stone slabs carved with stylised human figures. The name, in medieval Latin, was Castellucium de Sauro: the first part is a small fortification, the second a place or personal name that nobody has managed to identify. The first certain document is from 1118, when the Norman Robert II of Loritello gave the fief to the chapter of the church of Bovino.
Between the end of the fourteenth century and the first half of the fifteenth the village emptied, and to repopulate it, in 1446, some sixty Albanian families arrived, bringing the Greek-Byzantine rite with them. A century later, in 1549, Castelluccio was destroyed by the viceroy Pedro de Toledo, and from 1564 it became a fief of the Guevara, who held it until feudalism ended. Of that Arbëresh past the sources now speak in the past tense: neither the language nor the rite has come down to us.
