Saint Leo the Bishop and Herdonia
📅 Every year, on 22 January
Ordona celebrates Saint Leo the Bishop on 22 January, by the archaeological site of ancient Herdonia.
Herdonia was punished for having stayed loyal to Rome: after the second battle fought here against the Carthaginians, in 210 before Christ, Hannibal burned it and carried off its people. It was reborn later on the via Traiana and became a place of transit and of warehouses, with the forum, the amphitheatre, the baths and the granaries along the road.
After the medieval village was abandoned, for centuries there was nobody here. In the eighteenth century first came the Jesuits with a farm, then Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, who made Ordona one of the five colonial sites with which he meant to repopulate the Tavoliere. The comune, however, was born only on 2 May 1975: before that it was a hamlet of Orta Nova.
