In December 1754 Saint Alphonsus Liguori was preaching the Christmas novena to the Abruzzese shepherds who wintered on the Tavoliere, and in those days he wrote «Tu scendi dalle stelle». Whether he wrote it here, in the grotto under the convent of the Consolazione, or at Nola, scholars do not agree: on the date, they do.

The village's first nucleus was the Pesco quarter, caves dug in the rock below the castle — piscone, in dialect, means stone. The castle was begun by the Byzantines in the tenth century so that the people could take refuge during the Saracen raids; the Normans added the square tower and sent Calabrian militias to guard it: the quarter below the tower is still called rione Calabria.
