Accadia

Province: Foggia · Region: Puglia · Population: 2,418 · Postal code: 71021

On 21 July 1462 Ferrante of Aragon laid siege to Accadia. The town held out for nineteen days, then was taken and burned. That siege is carved on two panels of the bronze door of the Maschio Angioino in Naples, with a faithful drawing of how Accadia looked then: every year it is remembered with a costumed procession.

The name is said to come from falling water: there are springs and little waterfalls here, and a few kilometres away stood a village called Acquatorta, channelled water. The Fossi quarter, the oldest part of the town, was abandoned after the earthquake of the nineteen thirties, and many left for Buffalo, in New York State. Until the mid-twentieth century Accadia was in Campania, in the province of Avellino.
