Corsano

Province: Lecce · Region: Puglia · Population: 5,632 · Postal code: 73033

There are two roads for the name: tradition reads it as Cor and Sano, healthy heart; scholars trace it to a Roman centurion, Curtius. But the village really began with the Basilian monks, who fled the east so as not to submit to the iconoclast emperor: they brought here the cult of the two patrons, Saint Sophia and Saint Blaise, and the hamlet grew when the Saracens destroyed the ones nearby.

The church of Santa Sofia collapsed in 1932 because its bell tower gave way, was rebuilt in 1939 and has had to close again for years: under the foundations there is a layer of sand. The other parish church, of 1967, is an irregular pentagon with a perfect hexagon set on top of it, standing on six pillars. And then there is the trade: at Corsano they make neckties by hand.

Saint Blaise, patron of the Santa Maura fair

📅 Every year, on 3 February; 24 August brings the Saint Bartholomew town feast

Corsano celebrates Saint Blaise on 3 February, in the church dedicated to him. Though not a co-patron, Saint Bartholomew has his own town feast on 24 August; on 1 May, a traditional country fair is held near the Chapel of Santa Maura.
