Morciano di Leuca

Province: Lecce · Region: Puglia · Population: 3,416 · Postal code: 73040

The village was born in the ninth century, when the people of Vereto, destroyed by the Saracens, moved here. Much later, in 1335, the fief came to Walter VI of Brienne, who built the castle to hold off the designs of the count of Caserta: that castle is still in the coat of arms, where before there were three hills, the letter M and two olive branches.

Morciano was under Patù and became a municipality of its own only on the first of August 1838; in 1894 it also took Barbarano del Capo, which belonged to Salve. In the Barbarano land two vore open up, the sinkholes of the Salento karst: the Great one goes down thirty-four metres, the Small one twenty-five. In the chapel of the Madonna of Constantinople there is a monolith with a sixteenth-century Virgin painted over a fresco of the tenth.
