Saint Hypatius, patron of Tiggiano
📅 Every year, on 19 January
Tiggiano celebrates Saint Hypatius on 19 January, in the church dedicated to him.
Tiggiano has a stretch of coast but you cannot go down to it: the cliff is high and closed, and the sea is only to be looked at. The name may come from the gens Tedia, or from the god Janus, who is in the coat of arms; the village appears for the first time in a document of 1270, when it enters the county of Alessano.
In 1640 baron Gallone sold the fief to a physician and philosopher from Morciano, Angelo Serafini: his family were made barons the following year and ruled until 1806, leaving the palace with its Italian garden and its wood of holm oaks. On the front of the church of Sant'Ippazio, inside the niche, the statue of the saint has no head.
