Here the Greek rite lasted more than a thousand years: it came with the Byzantines in the sixth century and was kept until the seventeenth. Pieces of it can still be seen: on the façade of the mother church, which is of the sixteenth century, a bas-relief of Saint Nicholas is set, taken from the old Greek-rite church, and another church was built on the foundations of one dedicated to Saint Elijah.

Gagliano has served as a refuge more than once. In 877 it took in the survivors of Vereto, destroyed by the Saracens; between 1413 and 1421 it walled itself and the people of six hamlets around took shelter there; in 1547, after yet another pirate landing that carried off many people, the fortifications were strengthened. On the sea there is the Ciolo: a narrow, high inlet full of caves.
