People came to live up here because there was malaria on the coast, and the shore stayed marshland until the reclamation begun in 1930: today those very beaches are what the town lives on. Out in the sea off Torre Pali stands the stone tower finished in 1563, one of those the Spaniards set along the whole of the Salento to light fires and pass the alarm on when Barbary ships appeared.

The town tells of being born from a centurion named Salvius, who in 267 before Christ is supposed to have had these lands as a reward; the excavations, though, have it begin almost seven hundred years later. And of the lost citadel of Cassandra it was said that it had a mill able to grind gold nuggets: what it ground was oil and wine, until the Goths came.
