Villa San Pietro

Province: Cagliari · Region: Sardinia · Population: 2,009 · Postal code: 09050

In the Middle Ages the village was called Santu Pedru de Nuras; later it became San Pietro Pula, and on the twenty-eighth of June 1949 it took back the older name, Villa San Pietro, which dates from 1728. Of that distant time there remains the little Romanesque church of San Pietro, of the thirteenth century. When Pula was left deserted for fear of raids, Angius writes, this place always kept a certain number of pastoral and farming families, who lived off the fertility of the soil and the abundance of the pastures and made money on the wood they cut and sold to Cagliari.

Every second of May the procession of Sant'Efisio passes through Villa San Pietro on its way to Nora, and on the fourth, coming back, the saint on his country carriage circles the villa Atzori before setting off again towards Cagliari. That detour has been repeated since 1943: in the middle of the war and under the bombing, Mario Atzori helped the vow of 1656 to continue by carrying the statue himself, on the second from Sarroch to Pula and on the fourth from Pula to Sarroch. Since then the procession still goes round his house.
