Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Su Cramu
📅 Every year, on 16 July
Teulada celebrates Our Lady of Mount Carmel, known as Su Cramu, on 16 July, with a long procession through the town's streets involving various folk groups.
Teulada has 3,773 inhabitants between the mountains of the Sulcis and the southernmost coast of Sardinia: Capo Teulada is the island's extreme point. The name comes from the Roman Tegula and tells of a trade, the making of terracotta, confirmed by the kiln recently found near Tuerredda. On the coast remain the Punic tophet of Malfatano and, under the water, the harbour of Melqart.
The village moved twice to get away from the sea. The first settlement lay behind the isthmus of Capo Teulada; then, in the Middle Ages, it was refounded further inland, by the church of Sant'Isidoro; finally, emptied by Barbary raids and epidemics, it rebuilt itself in the seventeenth century further inland still, around the country church of San Francesco, where it stands today. Along the gulf the watchtowers remain — Malfatano, Piscinnì, Porto Budello, Porto Scudo, Cala Piombo — built against those pirates. In the nineteen-fifties seven thousand five hundred hectares of the comune were expropriated for the military base, and since then the island's southernmost point can be visited only from the sea and only at certain times.
