Bitti

Province: Nuoro · Region: Sardinia · Population: 3,019 · Postal code: 08021

Bitti has 3,019 inhabitants in the Barbagia, in a valley closed in by the hills of Sant'Elia, Monte Bannitu and Buon Cammino, with its stone houses set out like an amphitheatre around the church of San Giorgio. The name comes from the Sardinian sa bitta, the young doe: a legend tells of a doe killed by a hunter while she was drinking at the spring, and that spring is the fountain of Su Cantaru, still inside the village. Bitti is known above all for the canto a tenore: there are two historic groups here and a museum devoted to nothing else.

Thirteen kilometres from the village, in the middle of a cork wood, lies Romanzesu. The archaeologist Antonio Taramelli found it in 1919 while a search for water was going on: out came a sacred well, and behind the well a nuragic village of seven hectares with about a hundred huts, two megaron temples, a small rectangular temple and an elliptical stepped amphitheatre. There is also something the people of Bitti owe to a parish priest of theirs of the late sixteenth century, Antonio Canopolo: once he was archbishop, he guaranteed the young men of Bitti a free place of study in perpetuity at the seminary he had founded in Sassari.
