Jerzu

Province: Nuoro · Region: Sardinia · Population: 3,228 · Postal code: 08044

Jerzu has 3,228 inhabitants in the Ogliastra, at 450 metres inside the valley of the rio Pardu, and it has the tacchi over its head: those towers of dolomite that stick out of the mountainside and that here are called Porcu de ludu and Troiscu. The mountain the village stands on is a section through the history of the earth: at the base there are schists and quartzites of the Palaeozoic, above them the Jurassic tacchi, and in between there are something like four hundred million years.

The name appears for the first time in a deed of 1130, by which one Arzocu De Lacon gives the church of Santa Maria di Lotzorai everything he owns in the territory of Jerzu: the vines included. The vines are still there, and they are what makes the village: the valley floor is all planted with them, with olive groves on the flanks. The risk, if anything, is fire: in August 2004 a blaze driven by the scirocco burned for two days over five hundred hectares, reducing to ash the hills of Pitz'e Monti, Is Paganus and part of those of the Pelau.

Saint Erasmus and the feast of Saint Anthony

📅 Every year, on 2 June; Saint Anthony, the most heartfelt feast, on 13 June

Jerzu celebrates Saint Erasmus on 2 June, in the church dedicated to him. The town's most important feast, however, is that of Saint Anthony on 13 June, with a procession of the statue to the rural chapel.
