Tonara

Province: Nuoro · Region: Sardinia · Population: 2,116 · Postal code: 08039

Tonara was born from the merging of three quarters: Arasulè, Toneri and Teliseri. To these a fourth was added, Su Pranu, which grew from the nineteen sixties on the land of Ilalà, the lowest quarter of the valley, abandoned in 1938 because the main roads passed through the others. Each quarter still has its own committee for dealing with the municipality. Not far away stood another village, Spasulé, whose inhabitants moved little by little into Arasulè, until at the beginning of the eighteenth century it was left entirely empty.

When the giudicato fell and the Arborean cause was finally lost, Tonara passed under Aragonese rule, but obtained, together with the whole Mandrolisai, that it should be governed by a lord native to the district and chosen by election. In 1839, when the feudal system was abolished, Casalis counted here two thousand three hundred and eighty-three souls, of whom one thousand three hundred and twenty-three lived in the very sunny Arasulè, and barely more than fifty people who could read and write; the women spun, and the white cheeses were sold as far as Naples. Today the village is known across Sardinia for its hand-made nougat.
