Feast of Sant'Elena
📅 Every year, on 18 August
On 18 August Tiana, a municipality of 521 inhabitants in the province of Nuoro, celebrates its patroness Sant'Elena (Saint Helena).
Here Antonio Todde was born, lived and died, the longest-lived Italian man ever: one hundred and twelve years and three hundred and forty-six days. Tiana is one of the blue zones, the places in the world where people live longest, and it lies at the bottom of a valley closed off by the last mountains of the Gennargentu.
In 1846 twenty-one mills and eighteen fulling mills turned along the Tino: they ground and fulled for the villages around as well, and the women wove cloth that the men of Gavoi sold on all over the island. Of that line of machines two remain, a mill and a fulling mill, and they can be visited. The territory rises almost nine hundred metres from bottom to top, and the climate changes with it.
