Feast of Saint Sebastian
📅 Every year, on 20 January
On 20 January Albagiara, a small municipality of 277 inhabitants, celebrates its patron Saint Sebastian, to whom the town's church is dedicated.
Albagiara has changed its name three times in a century. It was a comune from 1861 under the name of Ollastra Usellus; in 1927 it was abolished and joined to Usellus, together with the villages of Bànnari — today Villa Verde — and Escovedu; it regained its independence in 1959 as Ollasta, and only in 1964 took the name it now bears. In Sardinian, though, the village remains Ollasta: the old name is the one people go on using.
The rest is a small territory of olive groves and woods, where timber is still worked. In the countryside five nuraghi are counted — Bingias, Furisinu, Lea, Lussorio and Porcili — which is a great many for a comune of this size, and shows that in the nuragic age there were rather more people up here than there are now. The language of the house is western Campidanese Sardinian.
