Assolo

Province: Oristano · Region: Sardinia · Population: 434 · Postal code: 09080

Assolo lies in the Marmilla, at the foot of the Giara, and it has a density of prehistory hard to explain to anyone who has not seen it: in the territory of this village of a few hundred people, twenty-four nuraghi are counted. The old centre, on the other hand, tells of the peasant Sardinia of yesterday: the Campidanese courtyard houses, with their great gateways still intact, the inner yards they call cortes here and the loggias, the lollas.

In the Middle Ages the village lay in the curatoria of Parte Valenza, inside the giudicato of Arborea, and under the Aragonese it passed from lord to lord until, from 1432, it was joined to the barony of Senis: from then on Assolo and Senis had the same masters, up to the buy-out of 1839 from the Nin Zatrillas. The parish church of San Sebastiano is of 1683, and at the feasts of Saint Isidore and Saint Lucy the traccas still parade, the decorated carts drawn by oxen.
