Gonnosnò

Province: Oristano · Region: Sardinia · Population: 800 · Postal code: 09090

In 1678, in the hamlet of Figu, the first Monte granatico in Sardinia was founded: a store that lent seed corn to the peasants and had it back with the harvest. The name Figu almost certainly comes from the fig trees, which were plentiful here; though there are those who trace it to a legendary bandit of that name.

The comune's own name has had a chequered life. In 1928 Gonnosnò and Figu were joined to Baressa; in 1947 they were split off again as the comune of Figu-Gonnosnò, and in 1964 the first half of the name fell away. As for Gonnosnò, the first part is a pre-Latin word meaning a height; for the second the learned tradition offers the Greek neòs, temple, or else new.
