Laconi

Province: Oristano · Region: Sardinia · Population: 2,008 · Postal code: 09090

The name of Laconi is thought to come from the pre-Roman Sardinian lacana, that is border or limit, and the ground bears it out: besides a very high number of nuraghi, the territory holds the remains of a Carthaginian fortification of the fifth century before Christ. From here came the Lacon family, which reappears in the houses that ruled the Sardinian giudicati under different names — Lacon-Gunale, Lacon-Serra, Lacon-Massa. On the twenty-fourth of January 1388 it was the representatives who came here, to sign the peace between the Arboreans and the Aragonese.

On the night between the twentieth and the twenty-first of June 1668 the marquis Agostino di Castelvì was murdered at Laconi, at the beginning of the crisis that would end with the killing of the viceroy. In more recent times the village has changed province twice: in 1927 it passed from Cagliari to the new province of Nuoro, and in 1999, after a referendum in which the yes reached ninety-four per cent, it asked to move again; a regional law of 2003 assigned it to Oristano. Every year, on the eve of the seventeenth of January, the great bonfires of Sant'Antonio are lit: the logs come down from the woods on tractors amid shouting, and people exchange two words whose meaning nobody knows any more, Sant'Antò and Toidò.
