Senis

Province: Oristano · Region: Sardinia · Population: 479 · Postal code: 09080

The barony of Senis, in the Middle Ages inside the curatoria of Parte Valenza in the giudicato of Arborea, became after 1420 something to be bought and sold: the first lord, Luigi Ludovico Pontos, was appointed by king Alfonso V the Magnanimous; in 1421 the fief was bought by Francesco Carbonell, and in 1432 by Pietro Joffrè, who had the king grant him a rare privilege, that of leaving the inheritance to his daughters if there were no sons. The last family, the Nin Zatrillas, were bought out in 1839.

In the territory there are eight nuraghi and a prehistoric flint quarry, the raw material blades were made from; until the thirteenth century the village was protected by a castle on the hill of Funtana Menta, of which nothing is left, while from the seventeenth century the remains of the baronial park and the Spanish fountain survive. From 1928 to 1950 Senis had no town hall of its own: it had been attached to the neighbouring municipality of Nureci.
