Nureci says of itself that it was born from a spring. Tradition has it that a shepherd from the old village of Genadas, following his flock, found a vein of water which he called Funtana e susu, and that the quality of that water made him move there with his family; others followed him, Genadas emptied, and below the spring the village grew. The fountain is still there and still gives water. In the territory there are the remains of fourteen nuraghi and a megalithic enclosure, a sign that people were up here long before.
In 1759 a merchant from Marseille, Guglielmo Touffani, bought this territory and with it the title of count of Nureci and Asuni: his family held the fief until the nineteenth-century redemption. In more recent times the village lost its comune, joined to Senis from 1928 to 1950. Today Nureci is made of courtyard houses, cobbled lanes, murals and sculptures by Pinuccio Sciola; and just outside is the geosite of Muru e Cubeddu, a Miocene fossil breccia declared a natural monument by the region, full of shells, crustaceans and sea urchins some twenty million years old.
