Genoni

Province: South Sardinia · Region: Sardinia · Population: 885 · Postal code: 09054

The village sits on the hill of Santu Antine, and the hill is an archive: the walls of a Punic fortress, the ruins of a Romanesque church and a nuragic well thirty-nine metres deep, the deepest in Sardinia, inside which a rare Roman mechanical winch for raising water was found. On the top, perhaps, there was a temple of Juno, and the name may come from there.

Of the four thousand two hundred hectares of the Giara di Gesturi, one thousand seven hundred are Genoni's: it is the volcanic plateau where the Giara ponies run free, brought by the Phoenicians and gone wild again, now more than six hundred, with a keeping centre at Impera Lavra. At Duidduru, Miocene fossils come to the surface: the only visitable geopalaeontological site on the island.
