Mogorella

Province: Oristano · Region: Sardinia · Population: 463 · Postal code: 09080

The name says a small hill, and it is first recorded in 1546. The village lies in the Alta Marmilla, north-east of the Monte Arci massif, in a countryside full of nuraghi: six of them are counted, among which the proto-nuraghe of Friarosu. That the Romans were here too is shown by a rare little bronze, the one they call the gladiator.

In the Middle Ages Mogorella lay in the curatoria of Parte Valenza, inside the giudicato of Arborea; after the Aragonese conquest the fief changed hands three times in a few years, passing from the Pontons to the Madello and finally to the Joffrè, the barons of Senis, who bought it from the heirs in 1435. On the hill at the entrance to the village stands the church of San Lorenzo, of the sixteenth century, with a Gothic-Aragonese front in pink trachyte.
