Villa Sant'Antonio

Province: Oristano · Region: Sardinia · Population: 382 · Postal code: 09080

Villa Sant'Antonio — Santu Antoni Arruìnas in Sardinian — stands on the hills of the Alta Marmilla, closed to the south by the Giara di Assolo. The village was born of a find: at the beginning of the eighteenth century a statue of Saint Anthony the Abbot was discovered beside a spring; an oratory was built on the spot and the first families settled around it. In 1720 the act of vassalage to the barony of Senis was signed, a fief of the Nin Zatrillas, and the redemption came in 1839 with the end of the feudal system.

The land, though, had been inhabited far longer: there are the menhirs of Carabassa, Monte Corru Tundu and Tuttiricchiu, the domus de janas of Genna Salixi, Is Forrus and Maccettu, the nuraghi Arruda, Bruncu Mannu, Crannaiou, Ispei and Su Moguru, and tombs from Roman times. The village lives on farming and herding, has one church of substance — Sant'Antonio Abate, which gave it its name — and speaks western Campidanese.
