Feast of the Beata Vergine Assunta
📅 Every year, on 15 August
On 15 August Borore, a municipality of 2,190 inhabitants in the province of Nuoro, celebrates its patroness the Beata Vergine Assunta (Blessed Virgin of the Assumption).
The name Borore, in the most widely accepted reading, is Phoenician-Punic: bor-hon, land rich in springs. The village, however, is known for something else, namely its eight giants' tombs, among them the one at Imbertighe, reproduced across half of archaeological literature. The excavations of 2002 at Duos Nuraghes turned up hundreds of carbonised grape pips datable to about 1200 before Christ: the vine was already being grown here, and cannonau, long believed to have been imported from Spain, may well have been born in Sardinia. The village name recalls the Phoenicians, but the vine did not wait for them.
There is also a more recent and less known story. In 1919, with the war just over, the Ministry of War built at Borore one of the first airfields on the island, to try out a daily airmail service. The field later passed to sport aviation, in 1943 it was garrisoned by soldiers without hosting operational units, and with the arrival of the Americans it served as an emergency field for Allied aircraft. When the war ended the mayor asked for the land back: the municipality regained possession of it only in 1996.
