Simaxis

Province: Oristano · Region: Sardinia · Population: 2,309 · Postal code: 09088

Simaxis gave its name to the curatoria of which it was the chief town in the Judicate of Arborea, and from then on its history is a passing from hand to hand: when the judicate fell, in 1410, it entered the marquisate of Oristano; after the defeat of the last marquis, Leonardo Alagon, it went to the Aragonese and to the Carroz family; around 1767 it ended up in the marquisate of Arcais, a fief of the Nurra, and in 1839 it bought itself out with the end of the feudal system. In 1928 the village grew by taking in San Vero Congius, until that day a comune in its own right.

The feast people talk about most, though, is a fake wedding. At carnival Simaxis celebrates Sa Coja de tziu Damus, the marriage of a badly matched couple — she tall and sturdy, he short and very thin — before an actor playing the mayor, with the whole village in agro-pastoral dress and the wedding procession filing through the streets; at the wedding dinner the guests have to bring their own food from home, and their own chair too. In November comes Rice Day, the thing the village is best known for beyond its own borders. The patron is Pope Symmachus, celebrated in July.
